When you draw a tree without any reference or sample, it will look a bit like this. Very basic. This is because you can not remember all the details of a tree. When you have drawn a lot of trees the drawing will look more enhanced, but actually the simple drawing is a good starting point.

It is always best to go outside and sketch and draw trees to truly study them. Trees are great to draw, because you never can go wrong. But to get a better understanding of a tree it is best to draw them in winter when all the leaves are gone. You will see the skeleton of the tree.

Tree parts
The tree is built up from several parts. The crown of the tree, the leaves, twigs, branches, trunk and roots.

Trunk
When you look at a tree, the trunk is never straight. they always have something of a curve.
Branches
As you draw the branches of the tree, never draw them symmetrical. Then the tree starts to look mechanical. The branches are very random, they grow toward the light. When you draw a tree up, the branches will get smaller and smaller.
Twigs
At the end of the branches the twigs come out. Draw them as random as possible. Lift up your pencil each time you draw a new twig, otherwise you will start to draw in an zig-zag pattern.

Leaves Clusters

Now it is time to draw the leaves of the tree. When you draw a tree from a distance you can’t see the individual leaves. What you see is clusters of leaves. The leaves are attached to all the twigs. I first make an outline of all the leave clusters. The clusters overlap each other, because the tree is a three dimensional object. By creating these overlapping shapes your tree will get more depth.

Outline of the tree
On a new layer I draw the outlines of all the leave clusters. They look a bit like clouds. The branches are covered by the leaves. Between the clusters you still see some parts of the trunk. Because you have already drawn the basic shape of the trunk, branches and twigs, you have a good base to draw the outlines.
