The controversial phone-tapping case in Telangana has now taken a new turn. Former Telangana Intelligence Chief T. Prabhakar Rao, an accused in the case, surrendered at the Jubilee Hills Police Station in Hyderabad on Friday, following the Supreme Court's direction. Rao surrendered before the investigating officer at 11 a.m. This entire case dates back to the time when some officers of the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) during the previous BRS government are accused of politically abusing the department's powers.
It is alleged that they were secretly monitoring several citizens, including people from various walks of life. Four police officers, including a suspended DSP of the SIB, have been arrested since March 2024.
What were the allegations against the police officers?
The four police officers arrested in the case were accused of erasing critical intelligence data from electronic devices and phone-tapping individuals for political gain. They were later granted bail.
The police allege that the accused officers conspired to unauthorizedly profile, monitor, and destroy evidence of their crimes, allegedly to benefit a political party.
Regarding the Supreme Court's directive in the case, on Thursday, a bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan stated that Rao's custodial interrogation was necessary. The court subsequently ordered Rao to surrender to the police by 11 a.m. on Friday. The court also emphasized that the interrogation should be conducted in accordance with the law and that he should continue to receive home-cooked food and medication.
It is noteworthy that on May 29, the Supreme Court granted Rao interim protection from arrest, but stipulated that he return to India and participate in the investigation.
