The King And I 1956 In Summary:
The King and I, is the sixth musical drama created by composer Richard Rodgers and writer Oscar Hammerstein. The drama is based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon (1944).

The drama begins in 1862, when Anna Leonowens, a newly widowed teacher, arrives in Bangkok at the King's request to train his many children. The King's prime minister, The Kralahome, comes to accompany Anna and her son, Louis, to the palace where they will remain for the length of their visit. Anna had indicated that she wanted to remain in a separate house prior to her arrival; she discovers that the King has already broken the conditions of their contract. She considers escaping, but instead decides to follow the Kralahome to the palace.
Anna and Louis will be restricted to their royal quarters for the next several weeks. Tuptim, a slave girl, arrives from Burma as a king's gift and is destined to become one of the King of Siam's numerous wives. She is, however, already in love with Lun Tha, the scholar who accompanied her on her voyage to Siam. She informs the King that while he may own her, he will never have her heart.
Anna is introduced to her new students by the King. She greets them and tells them about her late husband, Tom. The youngsters instantly enchant Anna. She is also told to educate their moms. In an effort to convince the King to recognize the significance of owning one’s own house, Anna focuses on teaching the school kids songs that highlight the advantages of home life. This annoys the King, who wonders why Anna is so stubborn. Anna is insistent about getting her own place to live, threatening to leave Siam if her demands are not granted. This causes immense sadness for the children and their moms. The King tries to exert his power over Anna by treating her as his servant; she flees, refusing to accept the King's rule.
Anna is enraged by the confrontation. Lady Thiang, the King's head wife, approaches her, stating that the King is concerned about his reputation as a barbarian in the West. Anna is astounded by this. Although the King is a polygamist, she would never consider him savage, Anna thought. The King informs her that the British are sending an ambassador to Siam to study the issue and are considering making Siam a protectorate.
The King's people are ordered to emulate some British habits in order to persuade the British that there is no need to meddle in Siam's governance. The King forces his wife to wear Western-style clothing, which they despise. The envoy comes, who turns out to be Sir Edward Ramsay, with whom Anna had a brief but passionate relationship. Fearing about her safety, Edward seeks to persuade her to return to British society.
While everyone is focused on Sir Edward's arrival, Tuptim arranges a meeting with Lun Tha, who informs her that he has a plan for both of them to escape and that she should prepare herself after supper. After investigating the place to his satisfaction, Sir Edward takes his leave. Anna and the King are thrilled with the evening's success, and to express his satisfaction with her, he presents her a ring.
Tuptim is reported missing by the secret police to the King shortly after. The King suspects Anna knows something about the disappearance, but Anna wonders why he is so concerned when Tuptim is simply one of many women to him.
The King is happy that Anna appears to be learning Siamese customs. Anna tries to explain to the King the customs of Western courtship, telling him about the important role of the formal dance. The King demands that Anna teach him the dance; in this way, they discover that they have great feelings for each other that they can never express aloud.

The Kralahome interrupts their private time by alerting the King that Tuptim has been apprehended. Stating that Tuptim must be punished, the King goes after her with the whip but finds himself unable to use it in Anna’s presence. Lun Tha is later discovered dead, and Tuptim is dragged away and never seen again.
Following this occurrence, Anna requests that the Kralahome deliver the ring to the King. She makes arrangements to depart Siam, and she and the King are unable to communicate for several weeks.
Just before she boards the ship, she receives word that the King is dying. She goes to his bedside, and they reconcile. The King convinces Anna to take the ring back, and remain in Siam to support his successor.
