Before Reply 1988 or Hospital Playlist ever existed, the Reply series was actually considered a potential failure even before filming began. In 2012, director Shin Won Ho and writer Lee Woo Jung took a bold leap by creating a drama, despite not coming from a drama background, but from variety shows instead.
Many people doubted them. Their script was offered to top actors but was turned down across the board. No big star was willing to take the risk of appearing on tvN, which at the time was still a small cable channel. On top of that, the story was filled with Busan dialect, which was considered “uncool” back then.
Yet, through Seo In Guk and Jung Eun Ji, both full of “firsts”, a miracle happened. With Reply 1997*, the legendary “Guess Who the Husband Is” concept was born, driving an entire nation crazy. Big budgets or famous names were never the guarantee; instead, it was from doubt and uncertainty that the *Reply series we love today was born.
