According to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, John Alite, 63, of Englishtown, was arrested June 19 and charged with theft by extortion, terroristic threats, usury (loan-sharking), corporate misconduct, and conspiracy. He was held without bail. A second man, Stephen Locrotondo, 67, was also charged. A statement released on Alite's behalf asks supporters to remember that a charge is not a conviction and that he is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence. These are allegations — Alite has not been convicted.
