Welcome to our journey to Issyk Lake — an alpine gem tucked into the Issyk Gorge in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains of Kazakhstan. Situated about 70 km east of Almaty at an elevation of around 1,760 m, this picturesque lake is fed by glacier melt and surrounded by forested peaks.

In 1963, a massive mudflow destroyed the lake’s natural dam, causing the lake to drain in just hours. Today, restoration efforts have revived the reservoir to around three-quarters of its former size.
