Spell was a one-off project of Rose McDowall (Sorrow, ex-Strawberry Switchblade) and Boyd Rice (NON) produced by Robert Lee (the other half of Sorrow).
Spell followed in the tradition of Sonny and Cher, Nancy and Lee - “one guy, one girl”. They released one album, Seasons In The Sun, an album filled with songs of love and death. It remains something of a hidden gem well worth discovering.
In this rare interview, originally broadcast on the radio in Finland they discuss how they met and how they came to work together on a pop record of songs they loved.
The album Seasons In The Sun featured songs originally performed or made famous by John Leyton, Bobby Sherman, Priscilla Paris, Dolly Parton, The Poppy Family, Twinkle, Terry Jacks, Marianne Faithfull, Nancy and Lee, along with the theme tune to the Roman Polanski film Rosemary's Baby while the Big Red Balloon single was backed by a setting of a poem by Rod McKuen.
The video features photographs, adverts and sleeves and a Melody Maker interview conducted by Cathi Unsworth – check out her noir crime novels.
Seasons In The Sun and Big Red Balloon were released by Mute Records.
Johnny Remember Me and Down From Dover featured on a 7-inch picture disc released by Sympathy For The Record Industry.
A second album was planned but never issued, although a cover version of I Got You Babe was included on the Piski Disk compilation album, The Final Solstice II.
Thanks go out to the person who recorded this and copied it for me. I've forgotten who it was but I still appreciate your generosity. In that spirit, I'm making this available to all to enjoy.
