We are FROZEN in TEXAS? | Behind the Braids Ep. 138

Описание: We just experienced the COLDEST temperatures in Texas since 1899 (down to -20F)! What did we do??? Prepped the house and pool equipment as best we could, helped our neighbors do the same, and went out and enjoyed the snow! Plus, recap my trip with Shaun to visit my parents in Kauai!

Texas isn't used to extreme cold weather and snow. We are prepped for tornadoes, hail, wind, electrical storms, and tropical storms... but not freezing snow and ice! A lot of the images/videos of pipes breaking in homes that you've seen on social media are actually from in-home fire sprinkler systems, not water lines, that are often installed in Texas homes for electrical fires from lightening, etc. Most homes up in the northern states do not have these systems.

We prepped our home the best ways we could, unplugged all electronics, turned off most lights, drained our fire sprinkler system, dripped our facets, placed a small space heater under our pool equipment and covered it all with a blue tarp, chipped off ice, etc. We were one of the lucky few families who had power the whole time, even when several neighbors from a few streets over did not. Even then, our home furnaces could barely keep up with the extreme cold. Outside of a pool valve that froze/broke and kept us up all night one night, we are VERY lucky and grateful.

Since we had power, we invited a few families to stay with us who were without heat and water. We also spent time at our church and school cleaning up water damage there, as well as helped many neighbors and friends who experienced damage.

In our down time, and to take some stress off our minds, we managed to find some time to sled down a hill in our neighborhood. This was the first time Daxton and Paisley has ever sled in snow! It was so much fun!

In the meantime, Brooklyn flew to Utah to visit Brooks and Kamri and they all went skiing. You'll also see some clips of a trip I took with Shaun to visit my parents in Kauai several weeks ago. (It has been seven months since I had seen them!) Kauai is the safest place in the US to be right now. They have only had a few cases of Covid in the past several months, and it has a VERY strenuous testing and certification/quarantine process to be approved to visit. What did it take to get there? Travel approval by the state, a negative test 72hrs before travel, maintaining social distance at the airport, social-distanced travel on Delta (which always keeps the middle seat open), 3 days quarantine in a resort bubble (Marriott has one), and another negative test 72hrs after landing... then you are FREE to go as long as you socially distance and continue to wear a mask! It was so nice to see my parents again, and enjoy the fresh ocean air! It has been WAY too long!
