In a fiery debate on the House floor, tensions flared as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act—or SAVE Act—drew sharp partisan lines. Designed to require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, the bill received support from only four Democrats, while the rest voiced strong opposition.
Under the proposed law, voters would need just one document—such as a passport, government-issued photo ID, or birth certificate—to prove their citizenship. Supporters argue it's a necessary step to secure the integrity of elections. But critics say it's an unnecessary hurdle, especially for women and low-income Americans.
Representative Laura Friedman from California labeled the bill a “modern-day poll tax,” claiming it unfairly targets American women whose names have changed after marriage. But Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert fired back, calling the concern a myth. Boebert said she’s never had to show a birth certificate to vote and questioned why women were being used as a “gotcha” in the argument.
As the debate continues, Democrats are raising alarms over potential voter suppression, while Republicans stand firm on ensuring election security.
