Spring Chironomid Fly Fishing the Stillwater Lakes of British Columbia's Interior Region is one of the most anticipated times of year for Fly Fishermen. If you like fly tying these little none biting insects hatch in droves during the spring and summer months of the open water season. The adult stage of these insects lays the egg on the surface of the water. The eggs fall to the bottom where they turn into a larva stage known as the blood worm. These later transform into the pupa phase that fills with gas and wriggles up to the surface. It is this free swimming form that trout absolutely gorge on in the open water months.
In a typical one-year life cycle, chironomids undergo a complete metamorphosis that includes egg, larva, pupa, and flying-adult stages. After hatching, the larvae live buried in the mud/water interface at the bottom of a lake at depths ranging from a couple of meters to over 25 meters. For this reason you will often have to search for the right depth that the pupa are rising off the bottom from. The key is to keep your fly in the strike range where the fish are cruising looking for these tiny presentations. Usually we fish 1 to 4 feet off the bottom.
In this video you will see that I am using a DEEPER Sonar that helps us see what depth the fish are swimming by at out where our floats are sitting. It also tells us if there are fish in the area. This added information is really nice to have during the day and helps you keep on catching fish when others might be struggling.
Matching the hatch is quite important. Usually the size and color is the most important. So grab yourself a varied assortment of flies before you head out next time to try you luck at Chironomid fishing.
Thanks to Adam for taking me out and sharing a great day fishing on the water with him. We had a great time even though it was a little bit cold and windy. The wound wasn't optimal, but we had plenty of action to keep us interested in our floats.
