Join us for our winter webinar 2023 series
Prof Richard Hingley, University of Durham explores what we know and can surmise about attitudes to rivers and their role in military strategy during the Roman conquest of central Britain (northern England/southern Scotland). Roman commanders considered waterways as sacred and each river, indeed each spring, was a sacred entity. For instance, we have an image of the River Tyne as a bearded male divinity from the Roman fort at Chesters on Hadrian’s Wall.
This webinar reconstructs some of the rhetorical ideas about water and land that motivated and helped to inform the Roman strategy of conquests in Britain from around AD 79 to AD 129 (Agricola to Hadrian).
Look out for Richard's book Conquering the Ocean. A paperback edition should be published in Spring 2024.
