What Embryo Grading Is Based On?
Embryo grading is a way to describe the appearance of an embryo under the microscope. The process focuses on three components:
ICM (Inner Cell Mass) – This becomes the baby.
TE (Trophectoderm) – This becomes the placenta.
ZP (Zona Pellucida) – The outer shell that protects the embryo.
The fluid-filled cavity inside is called the blastocoel.

Grading looks at how healthy the ICM and TE are. The thickness of the zona pellucida might also be considered, though not always. The best-looking embryo is ideally between 110–120 hours after ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

Three Key Points to Keep in Mind
Good morphology ≠ normal chromosomes. Even a perfect-looking embryo might not be genetically normal.
You can’t judge the mother’s or father’s age by looking at the embryo.
Timing matters. A Day 5 embryo usually has better implantation potential than Day 6 or 7 embryos, but many other

No. Even a great-quality embryo gives about 40–50% implantation rate on average. The outcome depends on multiple factors like:
Uterine health
Hormone levels
Maternal age
Protocol followed
Lab conditions
So don’t stress if you don’t see “4AA” in your report.

Why Some Clinics Use Day 2 or Day 3 Transfers?
Some clinics transfer embryos earlier—on Day 2 or 3—especially when there are fewer embryos or the patient has low AMH. The idea is to let the uterus act as a natural incubator. But globally, Day 5 (blastocyst) transfers are considered the gold standard.

Embryo grading is just one piece of the puzzle. Don’t get overwhelmed by codes like 4BC or 3AB. Understand the grading, ask your embryologist the right questions, and focus on the overall plan. Every cycle is unique.
