DECO 2023 Keynote speaker Eric McElvenny, USMC, ret. is an amputee endurance athlete who resides in Pittsburgh. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from the United States Military Academy in 2006 while preparing for his service as a Marine Corps Infantry Officer. Eric deployed 3 times as a Marine and was wounded by an IED during his final tour in Afghanistan. He suffered the amputation of his right leg below the knee.
Faced with a physical challenge and an uncertain future, Eric promised himself he would run an Ironman Triathlon. On his journey from the hospital bed in Southern California to the finish line in Kona, Hawaii, he realized the challenge and adversity he was up against and the practical techniques he used to reach the finish-line could be used against the challenges we all entertain. He now inspires others to embrace their challenges.
