Epilepsy is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can cause changes in behavior, movements or feelings, and states of consciousness. With epilepsy, signs and symptoms range from mild to severe and vary depending on the type of epilepsy. If someone is having a seizure, basic first aid is essential before taking them to the hospital for emergency treatment. First aid for epilepsy aims to keep the person safe until the seizure stops on its own. Most seizures last between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.
