The Aditya-L1 mission by ISRO and the Parker Solar Probe by NASA are both ambitious projects to study the Sun, but they have different objectives and approaches. Here are some of the main differences between them:
• The Aditya-L1 mission will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, which is about 1.5 million km from Earth. This will allow it to have a constant view of the Sun without any interference from the Earth or the Moon. The Parker Solar Probe, on the other hand, will fly much closer to the Sun, reaching a distance of about 6.2 million km at its closest approach. This will enable it to study the Sun’s corona, its outermost atmosphere, in unprecedented detail.
• The Aditya-L1 mission will carry seven instruments to study various aspects of the Sun, such as its photosphere, chromosphere, corona, solar wind, and energetic particles. The Parker Solar Probe will carry four instruments to measure the magnetic fields, plasma, energetic particles, and solar wind in the Sun’s corona.
• The Aditya-L1 mission is expected to operate for at least five years, while the Parker Solar Probe is planned to complete 24 orbits around the Sun in seven years.
• The Aditya-L1 mission is India’s first solar mission and a milestone for ISRO’s space exploration program. The Parker Solar Probe is NASA’s first mission to touch the Sun and the fastest spacecraft ever built. It is also named after Eugene Parker, a solar physicist who predicted the existence of the solar wind in the 1950s
