Ukulele Description:
“Makau” is a word in the Hawaiian language that translates to “fishhook”. Since the ocean was a vital source of food for ancient Hawaiians, the makau came to symbolize their deep connection and respect for the ocean. It served as a good luck charm for an abundant catch and for safe passage over the ocean’s waters. The makau also evokes the legend of the demigod Māui, who used his magical fishhook to pull the Hawaiian Islands from the ocean’s depths. In this way, the makau carries both cultural and legendary significance, linking Hawaiians to their ancestors, the ‘āina, and ka moana.
This ukulele features a rosewood makau inlaid on the soundboard contrasted against the spectacular curly koa. An abalone shell cord tied to the makau extends into the upper bout, giving the impression that the player is wearing the fishhook as a necklace.
It is built with a finely articulated Kasha bracing pattern that optimizes the entire soundboard through a carefully arranged system of light braces that maximize the string vibrations. Relocating the sound hole to the sides allows for a lighter braced top and increases the amount of vibrating soundboard wood. A live back design enables the back to move in response to the air pressure changes within the cavity and sweeten the tone.
