The reign of the Kakatiyas In 950AD the foundations of the Khammammetu were laid. For about 400 years the fort has been owned by the Kakatiyas.
The later Musunuri blacksmiths and the Qutb Shahi dynasty also played an admirable role in improving the fort .
First it is (Fort) Khammammetu. The Qutb Shahi descendants started to name it as Khammam Qilla. Sultan Quli Qutb Mulk captured the Khammam fort in 1531 by defeating the then ruler of Khammam, Sitab Khan (Sitapatiraju). Since then the fort has been ruled by the Qutb Shashis, In the 17th century, Telangana, like the Telangana, came to power.
Built of granite stones, this magnificent fort spreads over an area of four square kilometers. The fort has ten gates. The downtown is the main entrance to the west. The eastern side is called the Rocky Darwaza or the Old Darwaza. 60 cannons can be deployed around the fort. Inside the fort is an old mosque and palace built during the Jaffaruddula period. There is also a well called Zafar Bowli, which is sixty feet long and twenty feet wide. There is also a secret tunnel to avoid when the fort is under siege. There are also drains to keep rain water out. It is surrounded by a huge rock wall averaging between 40 and 80 feet (13 to 25 Meters) in height and 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 Meters) in width. There are steps from each buruju (bastion) to enter into the fort.
