He has made the study of this ancient Celtic instrument his life's work. People often talk loosely about someone having a "passion" for their work, embellishing that description with anecdotes and superlatives. But Simon is someone who is genuinely, emotionally immersed in every detail of his field. We talked about past, present and future projects. The intimate relationship between Scotland and Ireland. What is noticeable, is that this life student of the harp does not take ownership of his subject, but sees himself as conduit through which it will survive and thrive for future generations. This recording took place in the early evening as December's short day gave way to silhouettes then darkness. The Twilight holds symbolic significance in Irish and Scottish lore, a moment of reflection and possibilities, of two worlds meeting, of demise and new beginnings. These are good descriptions for the Irish harp diaspora. Though the old ways are distant, the talent and tenacity is not. Like all good folk stories, this one is imbued with a golden, spiritual thread that travels finely through time and space surprising new generations and comforting old.
