Hiking and mountain tours

Unterschächen is located at around 1000 m above sea level and is a great starting point for relaxing hikes or strenuous mountain tours. Surrounded by impressive three-thousand metre peaks such as the Great Ruchen, the Schärhorn or the Clariden, you have a variety of hiking and mountain touring opportunities. Hike comfortably to the power resort of Äsch and marvel at the approximately 100-meter-high dust waterfall up close. Or walk into the Brunnital: The wildly romantic valley impresses with untouched nature and steep rock walls. On the way to the limestone wall of the Ruchen, you will pass the Sittlisalp cable car. This takes you to Sittlisalp in just a few minutes, where you can visit the Sittlisalp alpine dairy, enjoy a refreshment at Alpbeizli on Alp Obsaum or admire the view at Lake Seewlisee.
It is also worth taking a ride to the Klausenpass. Start the Schächentaler Höhenweg there and hike along the Schächental to the Eggberge. Or take the opportunity to visit different Alps on the naturalistic high-altitude trail: From the Chammlialp to the Oberalp, then via the Niederalp to Wannelenalp and by cable car to Unterschächen.

Activities and sights

Are you looking for a change from hiking? Then we recommend a visit to the Bielen saw. The historic sawmill dates from 1850 and is located at the entrance to the Brunnital. On the sawmill there is a granite fountain, carved around 1870 by an Italian stonemason during the construction of the SBB Gotthardberg line. The crystal clear water flowing from the tube from the former thermal spring is there for everyone to drink. However, the use of the picnic area and the covered fireplace is only possible by prior appointment. The Bielen saw is a popular excursion meeting place for family celebrations, company outings, schools and aperitifs.
