Christopher Street Day ( CSD ) is a festival, commemoration and demonstration day for lesbians , gays , bisexuals , transgender people and intersex people . The largest parades on the occasion of the CSD in the German-speaking area take place in Berlin and Cologne .

The term Christopher Street Day is only common in Germany , parts of Austria and Switzerland . In English-speaking and Romance countries, people mostly talk about gay pride and pride parades , while in Slavic -speaking countries, commemorations for LGBTI people are mostly called equality parades , such as the Parada Równości in Poland .

The CSD commemorates the first known uprising of homosexuals and other sexual minorities against the arbitrary police force on New York's Christopher Street in the Greenwich Village district: in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, the so-called Stonewall uprising took place in the Stonewall Inn bar . At that time there were repeated violent police raids on pubs with a trans and homosexual target audience. Afro -Americans and those of Latin American descent were particularly affected by abuse and arbitrariness .

When drag queens and transsexual Latinas and blacks in particular resisted the recurring controls that evening , this was the trigger for days of street battles with the New York police. To commemorate the first anniversary of the uprising, the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee was formed. Since then, on the last Saturday in June, Christopher Street Liberation Day , New York has commemorated this event with a street parade. It has become an international tradition to hold a demonstration for gay and lesbian rights in the summer.

CSD Today

In almost every larger city in Germany there is a CSD today, the largest in Cologne ( Cologne Pride ) and Berlin, where the " Transgeniale CSD " also took place between 1998 and 2013. The parades and demonstrations during the CSD meanwhile represent similar attractions as, for example, carnival parades or the much newer techno parades . In Cologne, the Pride in 2002 as Europride with 1.2 million participants (participants and spectators) attracted more visitors to the city for the first time than the Shrove Monday parade , making it the largest Pride in Europe to date.

The CSD demonstrations in Germany do not take place exactly on the historical date, June 28th, but on the weekends from June to August. The CSD is planned, registered as a demonstration and carried out by locally structured organizations or individuals, often on a voluntary basis and organized in clubs. As a political demonstration, often with a political motto, the CSD usually takes the form of demonstration parades and a subsequent rally.

The rally is often supported and celebrated by artists with performances on stage. This celebration of one's own lifestyle is based on the origin of the CSD: the participants often show demonstratively that they are proud of themselves, their lives and their sexual identity, hence the name Gay Pride . In addition to the CSD parade and the final rallies, there are often street festivals and culture weeks lasting one to several days in many cities with well-known artists, political events, lectures, readings and parties.
