The Meaning of Anamnesis in the Catholic Church

Описание: During the consecration of the Catholic Mass, the priest repeats the words of Jesus from the Last Supper:

“Do this in memory of me.”

The theological term to refer to this moment is Anamnesis.

The term comes from the ancient Greek word meaning “remembrance” and referred to a “memorial sacrifice” or literally “reminiscence.”

But this is more than just remembering a past event.

During the consecration, the bread and the wine become Christ’s Body and Blood.

We do more than just remember.

We make the past present through the mystery of the Mass.

The enter into the events of the Paschal Mystery and Jesus’s death and resurrection. The sacrifice we offer on the altar is his sacred sacrifice on the Cross.

We become Christ’s Body and bring to the Mass our own sacrifice of ourselves and our lives.

This is not another sacrifice but a joining in that one and final sacrifice of Jesus made present again today.
