Cyclist and social activist Malem Thongam concluded the first phase of her “Cycling for Peace” campaign at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal on December 18, despite facing objections and restrictions from Kuki groups during her journey through Kangpokpi.
Malem cycled through five states—Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Nagaland—receiving support from diverse groups, but alleged lack of backing from sections of the Kuki community. She claimed that the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) attempted to block her entry into Kangpokpi, but with BSF protection, she crossed safely.
Malem condemned the threats and urged COTU to withdraw its directives, demanding legal action against those undermining Manipur’s integrity. She announced that the second phase will begin in 2027, covering more regions of India.
