Optical fibre is heated with a butane torch and pulled with motors to create a waist that is less than 1um in diameter (less than a spider web). This creates the evanescent field I use to excite whispering gallery modes in silica spheres for my Ph.D project.
To get the 'sound' of this process, LASER light is propagating through the fibre as it is heated & stretched. A photodiode records the intensity of the light. As the fibre melts, the core & cladding begin to mix and higher order modes are able to propagate and mix with the fundamental mode to create beating. Using MATLAB I have converted this signal into a sound wave. The beating can be heard near the end of the clip.
