It's hard to even get information on this (so correct any oversights or errors). The motets of Goa are a unique genre of Luso-Goan penitential songs that trace their origins back to the 16th-century mission, specifically evolving from the Passos (Passion rituals) introduced by the Franciscans and Jesuits. Originally strictly liturgical and sung in Latin, these compositions gradually incorporated local musical sensibilities, blending Western polyphony and Baroque counterpoint with the haunting, somber cadences of the Konkani language. Over the centuries, they shifted from purely clerical performances to community-led traditions, with the 19th century marking a "golden age". Apparently, at that time, local composers, such as those from the village of Santana de Talaulim, created complex multi-part harmonies specifically for Lenten processions. While the mid-20th century saw a decline due to modernization and liturgical reforms, there has been a significant contemporary revival of late; today, these motets are preserved by specialised choirs and cultural foundations. Here is a competition organised by the Pilar Music Academy.
