This is my last video of 2025, and I wish I could say that it was made and posted under cheerier circumstances.

On the 21st December my beloved Grandad (Grambo) passed away after I had driven down to Dorset with my parents to meet my sister, niece and nephew. What was going to be a wonderful Christmas holiday with the family turned into one that was still full of happiness and seasonal cheer, but also underscored by the deep sadness of losing my last grandad.

Grambo (which was our name for him as kids owing to the fact that we couldn't pronounce 'grandad' yet) always lived a three minute walk up the road from me. When me and my sister were really young he used to dress up as Santa Clause and walk down the road with a bag full of presents for us both. He built an entire Titanic model for me out of parts from a magazine over a number of years. When I became interested in making models he took me into his woodwork room and we built small planes and carriers together. In return, I remember making him a model Bismark one Christmas, and always talking to him about World War II and all of the planes, tanks and ships I was fond of. He worked in the merchant navy for a while and I do wish I had probed more stories from him about it over the years.

He lost his own father many years ago, and he gifted me the medals that he was awarded during the war when he probably wasn't quite ready to let go of them yet, all to aid in my growing interests.

Grambo is also where my 'Welshness' comes from. I have always been very proud of my heritage, but now that he is gone, I feel a very severe severence from that aspect of my anscestry.

Without slighting my other grandad, Grambo was the only grandad I had for the first 14 years or so of my life. Because of him I got to grow up knowing what having a grandad felt like. I was very lucky to have been his grandson.

This instrumental isn't really finished; it's more fragments of ideas that came out when I went to sit in my room after hearing the news of his passing. Some ideas had existed as little ditties for a while, but I tried to piece something together, and this is the result of that. I will likely return to this song when my heart can bear it and 'neaten it up' a little bit. For now, the spontaneous outpouring of emotion will suffice.

There will never be enough words to express my regret at not being able to say goodbye or to tell him that I love him one last time, but I will say here for all to read that he was a wonderful man with a dastardly sense of humour whose love will walk with for me forever - especially when I change the lyrics of popular songs to being about something crude or watching Wales play Rugby.

Guitar is a Martin 00-15M. Tuning is: BEBEBE. Capo 2nd fret. Recorded on a Zoom H2n.
Mixed in Pro Tools. Mastered using Ozone 10.

Filmed on a Canon R8 with an RF 24-50mm lens and an Urth Magnetic Ethereal ¼ Black Mist Filter Plus. Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

About Robert Barnett:
Robert Barnett is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in Rugby, Warwickshire. Robert has received high praise for his fingerstyle guitar technique and poetic lyricism. He is the guitarist for the band Wax Rats who released their debut album in August 2025, but still continues to be an active solo musician. Robert has released two full-length albums of original music, with 'Afterglow' seeing a release in December 2021, and his first instrumental album 'Voiceless' hot on its heels just 3 months later in February 2022!
