The Brewster F2A Buffalo has often been called the worst fighter aircraft of World War II. But was it really that bad — or is history being unfair?
When the war began, the Buffalo was one of the U.S. Navy’s primary carrier-based fighters. On paper, it looked modern. It had retractable landing gear, an enclosed cockpit, and decent firepower for its time.
But in combat — especially in the Pacific — things did not go as planned.
Outmatched by faster and more agile opponents, the Buffalo quickly earned a poor reputation among American and British pilots. However, interestingly, in Finnish service the aircraft performed far better than expected.
So what went wrong? Was it poor design, bad tactics, harsh conditions… or simply bad timing?
In this video, we explore:
• The development of the Brewster F2A
• Its combat record in the Pacific
• Why pilots struggled with it
• And why some countries had surprisingly good results
Some visual elements and aircraft reconstructions shown in this video were created using AI technology to enhance historical storytelling and provide a more immersive experience.
