They Actually Wore This?! 😍 Proof That the 1910s Were The Best Decade for Women's Fashion in History

I fully believe that the 1910s were the best decade for modern fashion and historical fashion. The ingenuity of design, the quirkiness, details, cuts, play on textures and materials is just chef's kiss*. This woman's ensemble is from what I believe is around 1914 - the tunic is a bit more forward in fashion, while the skirt is still keeping the narrower styles of the earlier teens. Nicole and I agree that this ensemble was professionally made, arguably a Designer™️ or Couture piece, that we've just lost the label because of the *gorgeous silk ikat lining being destroyed. (Let's take a moment of silence for that stunning lining...)

The construction of this not-so Edwardian ensemble is a bit bait & switchy. In some ways, it is incredibly basic level sewing and construction - the tunic is loosely fitted with gathers. It would be a beginner level sewing project for a historical costumer today, however, it's the details that knock it out of the park - the embroidery, the silk jacquard fabric, the silk satin sash, the buttons, and the strategic padding, indicating a carefully tailored garment - all of those lovely details that finish up with the most VampyDeliciousGothQueen™️ collar that makes us all fangirl over 1910s fashion. Then when we look at the skirt - who would have thought something that appears so simple is actually so complicated? The skirt obviously had to be draped on a mannequin to achieve its elegant swags and drapes around the curves of the body, and the hook and eye closure are just so...frustratingly 1910s. (They just loved turning their clothes into puzzles. I know that people say that 1920s fashion was a rejection of corsets, but I'm here with a new hypothesis - they were sick and tired of getting stuck in their clothes because of the thousand hooks, eyes, and snaps hidden all over the garment.)

Let's be honest - the woman who wore this ensemble was a QUEEN. Personally, I like to think of her living her best life in New York City, wearing shockingly dark lipstick, sipping cocktails, reading tarot, and having a wicked cabinet of curiosities in her living room. (I might just be describing my personal life goals, but I mean...) and I am so glad that she is in my collection!
