The Three Seas Initiative (3SI) is a collaborative economic platform that was launched by the presidents of countries within the region. It was inaugurated at the first 3SI Summit in Croatia on August 25, 2016. The initiative encompasses 12 member states of the European Union that are situated between the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic Seas. These countries include Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. As of 2023, Greece has joined as the 13th member, while Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova have been granted partner status.
The 3SI serves as a flexible and informal political platform, focusing on fostering cooperation in various sectors among its member states. The member countries of the initiative cover approximately 29% of the European Union's territory, are home to about 25% of the EU's inhabitants, and collectively produce around €2.3 trillion, which is approximately one-seventh of the EU's GDP. The overarching aim of the initiative is to promote economic development, with a particular emphasis on enhancing cross-border energy, transportation, and digital infrastructure.
The 8th edition of the Three Seas Initiative Summit was hosted by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, in Bucharest on September 6, 2023. Such summits play a crucial role in furthering the goals of the initiative by bringing together leaders and stakeholders from the member and partner countries to discuss and advance collaborative projects and strategies.
