This webinar presents recent research on power system planning in Kenya, developed through two complementary studies using a shared open-source modelling framework. The first explores the integration of capacity expansion and production cost models to better represent the operational challenges of high shares of variable renewables. The second extends the framework to explicitly account for the geospatial dimension of solar and wind deployment, revealing how site selection is shaped by trade-offs between resource quality, grid proximity, and temporal profiles. Together, the studies offer insights into planning robust, low-carbon electricity systems in rapidly developing contexts with high renewable potential.

Pietro is a Research Fellow at the UCL Energy Institute, specialising in energy modelling for sustainable development. His main research interests are in national energy system models and the role of modelling in planning and policymaking, with a focus on methods for addressing uncertainty and enhancing inclusiveness. In Kenya, Pietro has collaborated extensively with the Ministry of Energy, EPRA, KPLC, and other stakeholders on projects including the Kenya National e-Cooking Strategy, the co-development of power and whole energy system models, and analysis of the national green hydrogen strategy. He has a background in energy engineering and earned his PhD from the University of Florence, Italy.
