In the time that Francisco de Goya was creating his Los Caprichos series, his artistic career was flourishing, which motivated him to draw his self-portrait as the title etching of the series. It shows the spirit and fashion of Goya’s time as well as his critical eye.
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco captured the playful and critical atmosphere of Goya’s etching. Castelnuovo-Tedesco's piece starts with Preambulo, where the notes correspond to each syllable of Goya’s full name. The playful and confidently presented melody in the motif is a depiction of the painter’s debonair personality that can be seen in the etching.
The motif with Francisco de Goya’s name is used in the fugue that followes, combined with ascending and descending scales. The scales bring another part of the atmosphere of the Los Caprichos series – dreams, unreality and instability.
In the musical score at the end Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco again states: Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Pintor - in octaves.
Recorded for Master studies at Mozarteum University Salzburg in 2025.
Edited by Ana Gorjanc.
