#greetingsfromGermanyZbyglus Anyone who has never been to Dresden has never made a real trip around the world. "There is no such thing as a proverb, but a trip to the capital of Saxony should really be on everyone's bucket list, as Dresden has some of the most beautiful sights that Germany has to offer. The Frauenkirche, the Semperoper and the Dresden Zwinger alone would be reason enough to take a city trip to Dresden, but there is so much more to see here. Those who like it a little more urban, on the other hand, can simply get lost in Dresden Neustadt, which forms an absolute contrast to the old town. All in all, Dresden is definitely worth a trip - especially because it's so close.
Dresden is over 800 years old and became a city in 1206. Many Saxon dukes, dukes and kings called themselves home in Dresden, the most famous being August der Starke (August the Strong), who was also King of Poland. The many buildings that date back to their reign, especially the extensive art collections, are a testament to their extreme wealth. Raphael's Sistine Madonna, a famous oil painting of the Virgin Mary, was purchased by the son of Augustus the Strong and is on display in Dresden. The last Saxon king abdicated in 1918, famously saying "macht doch euern Dregg aleene" (roughly translated from the original Saxon as "do your own dirty work") when he did. Dresden is the capital of Saxony. It is often referred to locally as Elbflorenz or "Florence on the Elbe", reflecting its location on the River Elbe and its historic role as a center of art and beautiful architecture - similar to Florence, Italy. While Florence flourished in the early Renaissance, Dresden's Golden Age was in the 18th century, when Augustus the Strong and his son, Frederick Augustus II, Saxony was a wealthy and important state, and the rulers invested in lush architectural projects in their capital and supported world-renowned artists .
Dresden suffered catastrophic damage from Allied bombing in 1945 and subsequently lost much of its remaining architectural heritage at the hands of East German town planners. However, the city managed to restore some of its charm by rebuilding various monuments. The reconstruction of the famous Frauenkirche was completed just in time for what was marketed as the city's 800th birthday in 2006 (dated for its first mention in surviving historical documents, as is common in Germany).
Today, Dresden remains a charming, peaceful and beautiful city and has become a very popular tourist destination as well as a regional economic, political and academic center. About ten million tourists visit Dresden annually, most of them from Germany. International visitors mostly come from the Czech Republic, USA, Russia, Poland and Japan.
