The sidewalk in front of my own home was littered with black plastic bags, piled high like an neglected curb on trash day. I pulled the car over, my heart hammering against my ribs as my daughter, Chloe, scrambled out. Mom, why is my stuff in the street? she whispered.
I reached for the first bag, my fingers snagging on the zipper. Inside weren't grass clippings or household waste, but Chloe’s favorite hoodies and her violin case, tossed in with a callousness that made my blood run cold. She pulled out a pair of worn ballet shoes, clutching them to her chest as tears began to track through the dust on her cheeks.
I marched to the front door and jammed my key into the lock. It wouldn't turn. I tried again, rattling the handle until the metal groaned. The locks had been swapped. Through the glass, I could see the dim hallway of the house I had spent fifteen years funding, but no one moved.
