Yesterday, the Auburn Tigers fell to the Oklahoma Sooners 24-17 in a brutal matchup that went down to the wire — and the turning point might have been a botched officiating call that Auburn fans, players, and coaches are still reeling from.
In the second quarter, Oklahoma wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III appeared to exit the field as if to be substituted but then stayed in, just off the sideline. Auburn’s defense adjusted expecting a substitution. Instead, Sategna ran a route and caught a 24-yard touchdown pass, leaving Auburn confused and exposed.
The call, or lack thereof, violated NCAA Rule 9-2, Article 2 — the “unfair tactics” rule, which forbids simulated substitutions designed to deceive opponents. The SEC has since acknowledged the officiating crew missed this hideout tactic and said the play should have been flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
That touchdown gave Oklahoma momentum and a 10-3 lead — a lead that proved critical in a seven-point loss for Auburn. The missed call shifted field position and altered Auburn’s ability to respond. Coach Hugh Freeze said Auburn even attempted to call a timeout before the snap, but officials didn’t hear it.
