Iran Built Underground Missile Cities For Years, Now Changing Strategy Under U.S.-Israel Airstrikes

According to satellite imagery and analyst assessments, U.S. and Israeli aircraft and drones have been targeting missile launchers as they emerge from underground facilities. Heavy bomber strikes have also damaged entrances to several bunkers, in some cases trapping missile systems and launch vehicles inside.

Images reportedly show destroyed missiles and launchers near entrances of subterranean bases located near the Iranian cities of Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz and Kermanshah. Although most of these facilities are built underground, analysts say visible roads, buildings and access points make them identifiable in satellite photographs.

Iran had earlier showcased its underground missile infrastructure in a video released in March 2025, showing commanders inspecting long corridors filled with missile-carrying trucks. Some bases also contain crude underground silos dug into mountains and oriented toward the Persian Gulf.

However, experts say Iran has largely moved away from firing missiles directly from underground silos due to technical challenges.

Missile launches from Iran have declined in recent days, possibly due to damage to launch sites or a strategy to conserve missile stockpiles for a prolonged war.
