The 90s was a groundbreaking period for gaming, one where pop culture became centralized to a much larger degree within the video game space.
What that meant was that a lot of ‘interesting’ licensed games were produced. Join us today as we take you on a journey through our list of the absolute weirdest-in-class.
7up lovers of the world, did you know that your much-loved soda was once a playable platformer? Cool Spot was a 1993 release that allowed you to play as the red spot in the 7up logo, rescuing other spots while also surfing on soda bubbles. Drink it in!
It seemed like Shaq was everywhere in the 90s, so naturally it makes sense that he had his own video game. But surprisingly, developers didn’t go down the basketball route, oh no - they opted to plunge the NBA superstar into a different universe to fight evil mummies….
‘Home Improvement: Power Tool Pursuit!’ was, as you can imagine, a game based on the hit TV series Home Improvement. Obviously the game wasn’t based around household fixes, but beating off dinosaurs and robots with a nail gun - with no explanation as to why.
Imagine a slower, orange, Cheetos-sponsored version of Sonic The Hedgehog and you’ve got yourself Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool. Pawsitivily cool, huh?!
Revolution X was the Aerosmith-licensed CD-firing shooter where players would attempt to save the world through the means of rock and roll. Ridiculous, loud, and perfect for the 90s.
