USS Strong was a Fletcher-class destroyer that was named in honor of Rear Admiral James H. Strong, who famously rammed the Confederate Ironclad Tennessee during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. Strong was commissioned in August 1942, but her career was cut short less than a year later in the Solomons by a Japanese torpedo, and in the aftermath, one of her officers, Lieutenant Hugh B. Miller would become known as the Navy’s one man Army for his daring exploits after being stranded on a Japanese held island.
