South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence (GBV) in the world, which has been well reported. GBV in South Africa may appear to some to be yet another crime or violation of fundamental rights and freedoms. However, a thorough analysis reveals that GBV is one of the leading causes of death among women in our country, both in terms of magnitude and proportion.
While GBV is not limited to women, men are also victims of rape, murder, and other forms of gender-based violence, there is a significant statistical disparity between male and female victims of GBV. Women and teenage girls are the main victims of GBV, according to the United Nations Population Fund. Women and girls experience exasperated consequential suffering in contrast to men.
Intimate femicide is the deadliest form of GBV in South Africa, according to the number of women who have died at the hands of their male partners. My goal here isn't to mention or categorise all cases of GBV in South Africa, but rather to draw attention to the fact that perpetrators of GBV against women are almost always men who are close to their victims.
