Did you know waving a Palestinian flag at a protest in Berlin could land you in trouble with German authorities?
There’s an alarming climate of hostility towards pro-Palestinian voices in Germany today. This is seen through the repression of pro-Palestine activism, academics who speak out on Palestine being fired, and a silencing of pro-Palestinian voices – such as the Goethe-Institut’s cancellation of a talk by Sheikh Jarrah resident & activist Mohammed el-Kurd last year.
For a country that prides itself on learning from its dark past of Nazism, is Germany so intent on not being seen as anti-Semitic that it will defend Israel and Zionism at all costs? And in doing so, shift historical guilt onto Palestinians?
We spoke to members of the Palestinian community in Berlin to try to understand why Palestine has become so taboo in the country.
