At the Estadio Nacional in Santiago earlier this month, One Tree Hill was dedicated to Victor Jara, Chile’s great poet, theatre director and political activist. Jara was arrested, tortured and shot dead during the 1973 military coup in the country.

Bono also dedicated the performance to Rene Castro, attending the show with his family. It was here, during the military coup, that Rene, along with thousands of others, suffered at the hands of General Pinochet’s troops, when the stadium for eight weeks was turned into a prison camp.

A painter and mural artist, Rene got to know the band in the late 1980’s while living in San Francisco. His work became known to U2’s audience initially after featuring on The Joshua Tree Tour and later when the band commissioned him to come up with a series of striking, colourful images for the LoveTown Tour including a guitar, candle, snakes, dollar signs and stars and stripes. Later Rene also painted some of the cars on the ZOOTV Tour. As Bono says, ‘Rene Castro my amigo, still with us here tonight…'
