It’s not easy to find someone to talk to about sex, or to access youth-friendly sexual health services in Zambia. This can make it hard for young people to prevent unplanned pregnancies or protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Tikambe! (Let’s Talk!) is a joint BBC Media Action and Restless Development project in Zambia using TV, radio and online media to help young people look after their sexual health and improve their knowledge of their reproductive rights.
Tikambe Natulande is a weekly radio phone-in and debate show put together by young production teams and journalists in partnership with BBC Media Action. It gets young people openly talking about sex, STIs and how to prevent HIV and AIDS. As one listener commented via Facebook after listening to an episode on contraception, "unsafe sex brings about unplanned pregnancies and marriages.” Another remarked that the programme “is helping our parents to talk about sex issues with [us] …and the consequences of sex and pregnancy.”
