they also gather in the small area where you can strike their "feet", and you can spam jump underneath the barrier to eat food. if too many spawn, you can "lock" them in/prevent them from swarming you by placing a block up between the barrier and wall
post-raysworks edit: remove all floor blocks except the back row, and jump from further back, or jump on the left rather than the right, as removing the floor makes gaining blaze line of sight difficult. do not remove the fences in an open spawner
