The third lecture for today is "World Music: Cuban Music". This lecture was the third lecture of “ACJ Music Academy”, which was held on 28 March 2015.
First of all, let me briefly summarize “Cuban Music”.
Cuban music, including musical instruments, performances and dancing, was mainly influenced by the music of West Africa and Europe, especially Spain.
Such diversity of music genres made Cuban music one of the richest and most influential music in the world.
However, Cuba's traditional music rarely remained because of Spain’s abolition of Cuban aboriginal culture.
The Spanish rulers used the Cuban aborigines for labor force to run their farms, and after most of the aborigines were killed by the plague, they were replaced by the labor force with African black slaves.
It resulted in an increase of the black population in Cuba.
Since the 19th century, Cuban music has been very popular and influential all over the world and has become the most popular music since the introduction of recording technology.
Especially Cuban music has contributed to the development of various music genres and styles around the world, including Latin America, the Caribbean, West Africa and Europe.
Here are some of the main genres of Cuban music.
1. Son: One of the music and dance forms of Cuban origin. The origin of Mambo, Cha Cha Cha and Salsa.
2. Habanera: It means "Havana's Dance" which was named in Cuba. It was originated in British dance and introduced to France. It was the Spanish/American version of “Contradanse”, which was internationally a famous music and dance style in the 18th century. It became an important musical genre in Cuba in the 19th century.
3. Danzon: Developed from "Habanera", it was an official social dance music of Cuba
4. Cancion: A popular Latin American musical genre, especially in Cuba. It was originated from the Spanish boleros, Italian operetta, and French romanza.
5. Rumba: A kind of percussion rhythm, song and ballroom dance originated in Cuba. It was originated from the Cuban Spanish word "Rumbo".
6. Cha-cha-cha: Also known as "Cha-Cha", the name of a dance originated from Cuba which has an exciting rhythm.
7. Mambo: The musical form and dance style developed in Cuba. The "Mambo" means "dialogue with God" in "Kikongo", a language used by African slaves who have been taken to Cuba
8. Guaracha: A popular song featuring "humorous" lyrics originated from Spain
9. Conga: A carnival music that was originated in Cuba. It became popular in America in the 1930s and 1950s
10. Guajira: a musical form that gives a rural atmosphere in the lyrics, performance and style
