Zuerst veröffentlicht 1854 in den "Fliegenden Blättern". Die Melodie stammt von einer Volksweise aus der Zeit vor 1783. Von Scheffel, der bekannt ist für seine ironischen Texte, überträgt in dem Lied Erlebnisse aus seinem Studentenleben in frühgeschichtliche Zeiten.
Askalon ist eine Stadt im heutigen Israel. Zur Zeit des Alten Testaments war sie eine der 5 Hauptstädte der Philister. Die Anmerkung in der 6. Strophe, dass vor Ort kein Prophet geehrt würde, bezieht sich auf den alttestamentarischen Propheten Jonas, der von einem großen Wal verschluckt und später wieder bei der Stadt Niniveh ausgespuckt wurde.

A German student song that belongs to the category of mocking songs. Josef Victor von Scheffel (1826-1886) wrote the lyrics by the title “Old Assyrian”, first published in 1854 in the “Flying Sheets”. The melody is from a folk tune from before 1783. Von Scheffel, who is known for his ironic lyrics, transfers experiences from his student life to early historical times in the song.
Ashkelon is a city in modern-day Israel. In Old Testament times it was one of the five capitals of the Philistines. The comment in the 6th verse that no prophet would be honored there refers to the Old Testament prophet Jonah, who was swallowed by a large whale, and later he was spit out again near the city of Nineveh.
