Hello friends! Today we are going to talk about inguinal hernia.
What is an inguinal hernia? What are its causes, symptoms, treatments, complications, and how can it be prevented?
The inguinal area refers to the groin, and an inguinal hernia is a condition where a part of the intestine or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in this area. It is more common in males and can occur in two main types:
Hernias in children – usually seen in infants and young children.
Hernias in adults – the focus of this video.
We have a separate video specifically for hernias in children. In this video, we will discuss inguinal hernias in adult patients.
Causes of Inguinal Hernia
In adults, hernias mainly occur due to two reasons:
Weakness from birth or young age:
In some young adults, when the testes descend from the abdomen, a weakness may remain in the abdominal wall. Through this weak spot, intestines or fat can protrude, causing a hernia.
Age-related weakening:
As men age, the lower abdominal muscles may weaken. This allows intestines or fatty tissue (omentum) to push outward, forming a bulge.
Other risk factors in adulthood include:
Chronic cough (due to tuberculosis or other causes)
Urinary problems or straining while urinating
Constipation or straining during bowel movements
Pregnancy in women, which increases abdominal pressure
Heavy physical activity or lifting, which can increase pressure in the abdomen
Symptoms of Inguinal Hernia
Symptoms can vary, but commonly include:
A bulge in the groin area, which may be painful
Dragging or pulling sensation due to connected tissues
Pain may appear before or after the bulge becomes noticeable
Hernia may disappear when lying down and reappear when standing or moving
This characteristic of disappearing and reappearing with activity helps identify an inguinal hernia.
Treatment of Inguinal Hernia
There is no effective medicine for treating a hernia. Surgery is the only definitive solution. Delaying surgery can:
Increase the size of the hernia opening
Make surgery more complicated
Increase the risk of recurrence
Surgical options include:
Open surgery:
A cut is made over the hernia, and a mesh is placed to reinforce the abdominal wall.
Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery:
Small incisions are made on the abdomen
The hernia is repaired internally with a mesh
Benefits: minimal scarring, faster recovery, larger mesh coverage, and the ability to check and repair hernias on the other side if needed
Laparoscopic surgery also reduces the risk of recurrence compared to open surgery.
Complications of Untreated Hernia
If left untreated, hernias can lead to severe complications:
Strangulation, where the intestine cannot return to the abdomen
Severe pain, vomiting, and abdominal swelling
Intestinal obstruction
Gangrene, which can be life-threatening
Delaying surgery increases the size of the hernia and may require larger mesh during repair, increasing the risk of recurrence.
Prevention of Hernia
To prevent a hernia or its recurrence after surgery:
Avoid chronic constipation and straining
Treat urinary problems promptly, especially in older men with prostate issues
Maintain healthy muscle strength and regular exercise
Follow post-surgery restrictions on heavy activity
Maintain a healthy weight to reduce abdominal pressure
We hope this video gives you a clear understanding of inguinal hernia. If you are experiencing this problem, consult a doctor and get treatment early to return to a normal life.
