At our music school, we guide students to use the metronome to develop steady and accurate timing. While practicing, we recommend not looking at the metronome. Instead, listen carefully to the sound of the beat. If needed, increase the volume so it is clearly audible, then turn away from the screen or blinking light.
Focus on playing in sync with the pulse you hear. Pay close attention to the first beat of each measure, which usually sounds different from the other counts. Recognizing this will help you understand where each bar begins and stay aligned with the structure of the rhythm.
If you fall out of time, stop, listen again, and restart. Let your ears guide you back into the tempo. With consistent practice, this approach will help you build solid timing and greater rhythmic control.
