If you're curious about Alocasia Jacklyn and wondering whether it deserves a spot in your rare plant collection, you're in the right place! After two full years of living with this striking and slightly controversial tropical houseplant, I’m giving you a no-holds-barred review based on real-world experience.
This video was actually requested by quite a few of you, so thank you for pushing it up the priority list! In classic review style, I’ll walk you through everything: from background info to pests, propagation, accessories I recommend, and final thoughts.
🌿 The Backstory
Alocasia Jacklyn—also known by its botanical name Alocasia Sulawesi—is a rare tropical beauty that originates from Indonesia. What sets it apart? The wild, jagged edges on its leaves and that spiderweb-like veining that honestly looks like it was drawn by a sci-fi artist. It’s weird, in the best way possible.
But here’s the kicker—some people swear by this plant, others say it’s a total diva. So which is it?
🚀 Speed of Growth
In my experience? It’s surprisingly okay—steady, not fast. This isn’t a plant that’ll explode with new growth every week, but it also doesn’t just sit there looking moody for months. Over two years, I’ve seen consistent leaf production, with periods of dormancy during cooler seasons.
Just… don’t expect miracles. It’s more of a "slow and steady wins the race" situation.
✂️ Ease of Propagation
Propagation is possible, but not always beginner-friendly. Rhizome division is your best bet here. I’ll show you in the video how I’ve tried it, what worked, and what definitely didn’t.
It’s not as easy as propagating something like a Pothos or Monstera, but if you’ve got a bit of patience and some clean tools, you’ll be fine.
🛒 Availability
This is changing! Two years ago, it was super hard to find outside of specialty shops or rare plant groups. Now? A few big retailers and trusted sellers (especially online) are starting to carry it. Prices have come down
🐛 Pests & Problems
Let’s be real—Alocasias are basically magnets for spider mites, and Jacklyn is an exception in my experince!!!!
There’s also the issue of leaf droop, which freaks people out but is sometimes totally normal.
🧴 Accessories & Care Tips
From humidifiers to soil blends, I’ll show what’s worked best for keeping my Jacklyn happy. I’ve also had the best luck with a chunky aroid mix and a humidity level around 60-70%. A pebble tray or even just a bathroom placement can help too.
Lighting-wise, it loves bright, indirect light. Direct sun? Nope. You’ll see browning faster than you can say “tropical drama queen.”
❗ Final Thoughts
So, would I recommend it? Honestly… Wait and see on the video...
For beginners? Maybe start with another Alocasia first—like Polly or Frydek—then come back for Jacklyn once you’ve got the hang of their quirks.
And if you're thinking of adding one to your collection, or just want to know if it’ll drive you crazy or make you proud, this video is for you.
