Back in 1998, author and guitarist Banning Eyre and musician Dirck Westervelt were living in Zimbabwe, working with Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited. Having recently spent time studying music in Bamako, Mali, they found time to play Malian music with Mapfumo's mbira players, notably Bezil Makombe. Their version of the Mande traditional song "Kulanjan" eventually became a track on Mapfumo's album, Chimurenga '98., the song "Ndiyani Waparadza Musha." The title translates "Who has destroyed my home?" and it was a passionate lament on the worsening state of life in Zimbabwe.
Twenty-seven years later, Eyre, Westervelt and Makombe found themselves together again in Middletown, CT. They played a concert at the Middletown Free Center. This video revisits the trio's original version of the Malian classic.
