Halifax Explosion (1917) | The Largest Man-Made Explosion Before Nuclear Age
The Halifax Explosion of 1917 remains one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history and the largest man-made explosion prior to the atomic bomb. On December 6, 1917, during World War I, the French cargo ship SS Mont-Blanc, loaded with high explosives, collided with another vessel in Halifax Harbour. Moments later, a massive blast ripped through the city of Halifax, leveling neighborhoods and shattering windows miles away.
The explosion killed nearly 2,000 people, injured over 9,000, and left tens of thousands homeless. A powerful shockwave, fires, and a tsunami combined to devastate the waterfront and surrounding communities. The blast was felt hundreds of kilometers away and permanently altered the city’s landscape.
The Halifax Explosion exposed critical failures in maritime safety, wartime port management, and emergency response planning. It also led to lasting changes in shipping regulations and disaster preparedness worldwide.
In this video, we uncover the causes, timeline, human toll, and lasting legacy of the Halifax Explosion—an event that reshaped disaster response and safety standards forever.
