In US news and current events today, researchers have demonstrated in initial tests  that a unique antibody produced by llamas could lead to an effective treatment for COVID-19. The surface of coronaviruses, including the one that causes COVID-19, known as SARS-CoV-2, are covered with a protein known as the spike protein. This protein is what allows the coronavirus to break into host cells and cause infection. Researchers engineered a special antibody by combining 2 copies of the unique antibody produced by llamas. That special antibody binds tightly to the spike protein on SARS-CoV-2, thus blocking the virus from entering host cells. The research team, composed of scientists from the Univ. of Texas at Austin and Ghent University in Belgium, published their findings on May 5 in the peer-reviewed journal Cell.
