When propelling yourself forward while running, how you push off matters.
A common issue I see is pushing off the outside of the foot instead of the ball of the foot and big toe. While this may feel natural for some runners, it can limit efficiency and change how force is distributed through the lower leg.
Pushing off through the ball of the foot and big toe allows you to better recruit your primary plantar flexors—the gastrocnemius and soleus—rather than relying on secondary muscles like the peroneals.
Over time, inefficient push-off mechanics can contribute to decreased performance and increased stress on certain tissues.
Common factors that may contribute include:
• Limited big toe extension
• Poor push-off coordination
• Weak gastrocnemius–soleus complex
Improving push-off mechanics starts with addressing mobility, strength, and coordination—so your body can produce force efficiently with every stride.
